How to extend laptop battery life

Short answer: After reading articles on this, It seems laptop battery life can be extended avoiding frequent total discharges. You can avoid complete discharges by setting up alerts to plug in power adapter when battery goes down to particular level.

I had a 4 year old laptop. It did not charge at all after using it more than couple of years. Normal Lithium-ion battery can charge & discharge for about 300 to 800 cycles. Consumer electronics devices like laptop & cell phones use Lithium-ion batteries mostly now. So this is applicable to most devices.
Extending Laptop Battery Life:
I bought a new dell laptop recently. It displays alerts if battery has 5% or 10% charge left. I modified these notifications to avoid total discharges.
In Windows 7, Click on your battery icon in system tray and go to more power options -> Change plan settings -> Change advanced power settings, you can change low level battery, critical level battery settings.
i changed them to 30% and 25% to make sure I plug in power adapter before it discharges completely. You can keep charging all the time. It does not make much difference. Also, keeping battery in cool temperatures makes battery life last longer
If you are planning not to use laptop for a long time (like when you go on vacation), make sure it is charged about 40% and leave it. This way it keeps it’s mojo. You can read more technical details here
