More than 83 million profiles on Facebook are fake

Facebook has just confirmed that more than 83 million user profiles on the social network are fake.
In company filings published this week, Facebook said that 8.7% of its 955 million active users might be fake.
The largest groups of fakes users were “duplicate accounts” that a user maintained in addition to his or her primary account. Duplicate profiles made up 4.8% of Facebook users.
Other fake profiles were described as “user-misclassified” where users have created personal profiles for a business, organization, or non-human entity such as a pets. These amounted to 2.4% of Facebook accounts.
The third group of fake profiles called “undesirable” accounts were deemed to be in breach of Facebook’s terms of service. This mainly refers to profiles which have been used for sending spam messages. 1.5% of users were described as “undesirable”.
The fact that there are so many fake users on Facebook, makes us wonder how credible the social network is for advertising.
“We generate a substantial majority of our revenue from advertising. The loss of advertisers, or reduction in spending by advertisers with Facebook, could seriously harm our business If we are unable to maintain and increase our user base and user engagement, our revenue, financial results, and future growth potential may be adversely affected,” Facebook stated in its financial report.
